Detail

The fine arts of Macau began with the Bible illustrations and icon paintings of missionaries in China. The Italian Giovanni of the Society of Jesus painted the oil painting "The Savior" for the Church of Our Lady, which was the first oil painting painted by a Western missionary in China. . British painter George Channery created a large number of watercolor landscape paintings and sketches in Macau. His painting method greatly influenced professional painters in Macau, Hong Kong and Guangzhou. During the Anti-Japanese War, Gao Jianfu took refuge in Macau and opened a museum to teach apprentices, which led to the development of Macau's painting and calligraphy art. There are not too many “antique” customs in Macao’s paintings, and some are realistic painting traditions. The music of Macao originated from Taoism in China, and the "sacred opera" in front of the A-Ma Temple introduced Cantonese opera to Macao. The "Southern Sound of Dishui" from Guangdong is also sung along with artists in Macau. Western-style bands were initially spread in the form of military music in Macau. The band has performed a large number of polkas, waltz, and opera adaptations. In addition to the lion and dragon dances that have the original ecology of the people's self-entertainment and have the meaning of "folklore", the dances of Macao, folk dances, folk dances and ballroom dances are popular in all different classes of Macao.
