Detail

Macau has a population of more than 600,000, but there are more than 6,000 various associations. The associations give Macau people a sense of belonging, let people embody their identity and status, and win social recognition and respect. The "society society" of Macau reflects the history, economy, society and culture of Macau in different periods and times. Faced with a vague and unknown fate, the early folk religious organizations played a public social function. In the 19th century, secular public welfare organizations began to flourish in Macau. With the changes in the economic status and structure of Macau, commercial organizations such as guild halls and guilds came into being. In the 20th century, the original guilds composed of employers and employees were gradually replaced by employers’ chambers of commerce and labor unions. Among them, the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce of Macau, the Federation of Trade Unions of Macau, the Federation of Macau Neighbourhood Associations, the Federation of Macau Women's Federation, the Macau Chinese Education Association, the Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese of Macau, the Federation of Macau Youth, the Federation of Macau Chinese Students, etc. The role of safeguarding rights and stabilizing society continues to this day.
