Taoism is the native religion of the Chinese nation, and Mazu belief can be said to be the earliest folk belief related to Taoism in Macau. The origin of Buddhism in Macau can be traced back to the Zen master of Zhenjiao during the Xiantong period of the Tang Dynasty. The Puji Temple was one of the early temples in Macau. Guanyin and Mazu, Buddhism and Taoism, have been the most important and main beliefs of Macao Chinese for hundreds of years. In 1540, the Jesuit priest Francis Xavier established the first church in China's history on Shangchuan Island, Guangdong. Gonzalez was the first priest to create a Catholic missionary base in Macau. In 1602, the St. Paul's Church (commonly known as St. Paul's Church), a cathedral that blended Eastern and Western cultural characteristics, was established. Protestantism was introduced to China, and Macau was the first stop. Morrison was the first Protestant missionary sent by the West to China. Over the centuries, Macau has become a gathering place for religions of all sizes in the world. On this land, they converge and exhibit, and coexist in harmony, which constitutes the unique multi-religious cultural characteristics of Macau today.
